Italy – Experience “La Dolce Vita”!
Italy produces the most wine in the world but much of it is drunk in Italy (sensible people the Italians, why sell it when you can drink it yourself?).
It’s a complex and somewhat confusing country for those of us used to picking out wines labelled varietally, but investing time to understand the wines and their labelling brings rich rewards.
The massive sales success of Prosecco has meant that we now import vastly more Italian wine than ever before and so we will start the evening with a glass of the bestselling sparkling wine in the UK.
Then our tour begins, with fresh and fruity Pinot Grigio from Alto Aldige, sweeping down into Veneto, home to Soave and Valpolicella, including the unique and fabulous Amarone della Valpolicella, then West to Piedmont home of the “King of Italian Wine” – Barolo as well as Barbera, Dolcetto and Gavi. Then South to Tuscany home of the most famous of Italian wines – Chianti. We will also have a look at some of the lesser known wines of the South made from Primitivo, Negroamaro and Aglianico.
None of these wines are made from “International” grape varieties, they are all truly and authentically Italian.
We will taste a total of eight wines, and because Italian wine is really intended to be drunk with food some Antipasti will be provided to help things along.
