Spain and Portugal In One Evening!
This exciting evening tasting explores Spain and Portugal during which you will taste a range of wines that reflect the proud traditions of the culturally distinctive regions of these wonderful countries
The tasting kick's off in Catalunya, with a glass of Spanish bubbly, Cava, from Penedes. We'll explore and explain the similarities and differences between Cava and Champagne.
Travelling to the other end of the country, we will sample a dry Fino or Manzanilla Sherry from Jerez a hugely underrated and fabulous wine, and quite different from its image as a mainly sweet wine that your grandmother quite likes.
Next we will travel to Rias Baixas in the North West of Spain where the Atlantic influence is strong to sample some fashionable Albariño which we will contrast with Vinho Verde from Northern Portugal.
Then we will spend some time in Rioja, Spain's most famous export, home of the Tempranillo grape. We'll explain the difference between different styles of Rioja from Crianza to Gran Reserva and you'll understand what makes this classic wine region so special and unique. We will then explore another exciting style of Tempranillio from up and coming region Ribera del Duero that is creating it's own distinctive reputation for fine red wines as it prepares to challenge Rioja for the crown of greatest Spainsh red wine region.
To complete the Tempranillo comparisons we will then travel down the Duero until it becomes the Duoro in Portugal. Although famous for its fortified Port wines, fabulous table wines are produced here, mainly from the Tinto Roriz grape (or Tempranillo as the Spanish would call it).
Next you will try a wine from Priorat, a tiny wine region that punches way above its weight in the world of wine due to it's distinctive stable of red wines that are both edgy and elegant.
Finally we can't leave Iberia without a glass of Port. We will also explain how this wine is made, the different types and its long connection to Britain.
To complement the wines some tapas will be provided.
Professional ISO tasting glasses, all tasting materials, including tasting sheets and table water are provided
