Tour De France 3 - South West & Languedoc
Week three of our four week event celebrating the most famous cycle race in the world - the Tour De France!
As luck would have it the route of the 2019 race takes the riders through some of the most famous wine regions in the world, and some not quite so famous as well.
In week three, the cyclists head for South West France and the Languedoc region. This gives us an opportunity to sample some of the lesser known wines of France, with a huge range of styles and all representing great value for money.
We start with a Sparkling wine from Limoux. Here is where the monk that is associated with Champagne - Dom Perignon came from and the Limoux sparkling wine is made in the same way as it's more famous cousin that we met in week one.
Then we pop down onto the Mediterranean coast and sample a bone dry white wine from fashionable Picpoul de Pinet, the "Muscadet of the South".
Far in the South West of France, in the foothills of the Pyrenees is produced a sweet white wine known as Pacherenc. This makes an interesting comparison with the more well known sweet wines of France such as Sauternes AC being much fresher and lighter than its famous cousin.
Then its time for some big beefy reds, and they don't come much bigger or beefier than Madiran and Cahors. Madiran is made from the little know Tannat grape variety, that produces full-bodied, tannic wines that have to be sipped and respected. Conversely, Cahors' grape variety is extremely well known, for this is the ancestral home of Argetina's flagship grape - Malbec. If you think you understand Malbec, try this one as it is very different. A wine so dark it is almost black, fruity and tannic, another very serious red wine.
Finally, we return to the Languedoc region on the Mediterranean for another big red wine made from a cocktail of grapes including Grenache, Carignan and Syrah. Phew, like the cyclists it's time for a rest now!
Discover your new favourite wine from regions you've never heard of before!
