Alsace Wines - Online
A new era is dawning for everyone involved in classrooms and events. Using modern technology, we can enjoy learning about our favourite wines (and gin) from the comfort and safety of our own homes. This has the added advantage that nobody needs to be the “designated driver”. Using Zoom video conferencing is just like being in the room with Gary, who will, as ever educate, inform and entertain you for about an hour.
All sessions will be recorded and if you can't attend at the last minute just let us know so you can go through the event at your convenience later.
Why not invite your friends to make it a truly social experience?
Alsace has a unique position in the world of French wine. Its location gives it the lowest rainfall in France and wonderful long dry autumns – perfect for ripening to perfection some lovely wines. Historic German influences in both wine and cuisine makes Alsace somewhere really rather special.
The wonderful Riesling grape variety is very much at home in Alsace and as a counter to the version produced in neighbouring Germany is almost always dry but with a depth and richness that makes it very food friendly. Alongside Riesling we sample a Gewurztraminer. As the name implies this is another Germanic grape variety (but rarely grown in modern Germany) and its name translates as “spicy wine”. A fabulously aromatic varietal with a perfumed nose of tropical fruits, spices and flowers, it has some real weight and from good vineyard locations can produce powerfully rich wines.
Join us we compare and contrast these two styles of wine from Alsace. Can we suggest perhaps, some Quiche Lorraine to nibble alongside?
All YOU have to do is purchase a ticket from the Shropshire Wine School website by clicking the "BOOK" button below, as you would normally. A ticket entitles ALL members of your household to join in. There is no need to buy one ticket per person. Once your ticket purchased, you will receive a confirmation email with your ZOOM web link and password 2 days before the event itself.
Then pop out and buy (or buy online) two wines to compare. The two I will be uncorking are:
• Rolly Gassmann Riesling, Alsace AC 2013 (available from Waitrose)
• Dopff & Irion, Cuvée René Dopff Alsace AC 2016 (available from Tanners)
However, as usual just try to obtain similar wines if you can’t find an exact match
This event is part of our short 3-week tour of regional France. Why not book all three weeks together and save £10? Full details available here.
