Event Description

Nothing beats a leisurely Saturday afternoon sampling some great authentic dishes accompanied by some fabulous wine.

We have partnered with our friends at Riverbank Bar & Kitchen, specialists in Mediterranean themed food to create a new format food and wine event.

This venue is superbly located on the bank of the River Severn with stunning views.

Over the course of 2.5 hours or so, we will sample seven dishes in “taster menu” format paired with seven expertly chosen wines.  All the dishes have a distinctive Mediterranean theme, and the wines are paired accordingly.  There will be fine wines from Spain, France, Italy and Greece including a fortified wine and a sparkling wine.

This is a more informal and convivial event than most of our others and although you will undoubtedly learn about some well-known wines, and perhaps discover some new favourites, there will not be a formal presentation.  Instead, let us enjoy the food and wine, whilst learning about the wines’ origins and of course “tasting like a professional” throughout.

Read on for more information:

  1. We start with some Manzanilla Sherry accompanied by some olives.  If your only experience of Sherry is something your grandmother kept at the back of the cupboard, let us introduce you to something quite different.  An intensely aromatic pale coloured fortified wine that reeks of nuts, bruised apples and perhaps a whiff of the sea.
  2. Keeping the theme of the sea, we move onto the South of France and sample a Picpoul de Pinet AOC which cries out for some seafood.  This requirement is fulfilled as we pair it with some salt and pepper calamari.
  3. We next visit Greece to sample what is regarding as their best white grape variety – Assyrtiko.  This variety hails originally from Santorini, although there is very little made there today.  To pair with this wine, we will have some lemon and chickpea hummus.
  4. Switching now to red wine we make our first visit to Italy.  The Italians call Nebbiolo the “King of wines and the wine of kings”, and it's certainly one of my own personal favourites.  It works extremely well with mushroom dishes so we will pair it with mushroom risotto.
  5. Our second Greek wine is one of their main red varieties, the almost impossible to pronounce correctly Agiorgitiko.  This elegant red wine will be paired with classic Greek Beef Stifado.
  6. Next, we return to Spain to sample a powerful Garnacha-based wine from Catalonia.  This will be paired with chunky chorizo bites.
  7. Finally, its time for something sweet.  If you’re experience with Asti is only the mass-produced version in supermarkets, we have something really rather special for you; a delightful Moscato d’Asti DOCG.  This low alcohol, lightly sparkling, medium-sweet wine is paired with tiramisu.

Perfect for foodies!

Professional ISO tasting glasses and all tasting materials including tasting sheets are provided as are crackers and table water.
