Evening Tasting; France vs New World

Evening Tasting; France vs New World

Many of the most famous wines in the world originate in France. Such is the popularity of Bordeaux, Burgundy and wines from the valleys of the Loire and Rhône that the grape varieties have been planted all over the New World. In fact most people now associate Sauvignon Blanc with New Zealand and perhaps Chardonnay with Australia or California.

Tonight we will compare three French “classic wines” with similarly priced new world alternatives. We will discuss the influence of climate and what the French call “terroir” a term that means much more than the type of soil in which the vines were grown but encapsulates all the local factors such as the soil, topography, and climate. We will also discuss whether the New World winemaker was trying to emulate the classic French style or create something quite different and distinctive.

Approach this wine an open mind and you may be surprised at the results!

We will try at least six wines to compare and contrast from the list below.

  • Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire valley vs New Zealand
  • Chenin Blanc from the Loire Valley vs South Africa
  • Chardonnay from Burgundy vs Australia
  • Riesling from Alsace vs Australia
  • Pinot Noir from Burgundy vs New Zealand
  • Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot from Bordeaux vs Chile
  • Syrah from the Rhône valley vs Argentina
  • Grenache/Syrah/Mourvedre from the Rhône Valley vs Australia
