Fine Wines of The Loire - Online
A new era is dawning for everyone involved in classrooms and events. Using modern technology, we can enjoy learning about our favourite wines (and gin) from the comfort and safety of our own homes. This has the added advantage that nobody needs to be the “designated driver”!
All sessions will be recorded and if you can't attend at the last minute just let us know so you can go through the event at your convenience later.
Why not invite your friends to make it a truly social experience?
January can be a ”difficult time” for wine lovers. Should you go for a “dry January?” – What a ridiculous idea! Despite the continuing restrictions on socialising, virtual wine tastings are a great way of blowing away those winter blues.
Nothing could dispel those winter blues more than a tour of the romantic Loire Valley in France. Over four Friday evenings, using Zoom video conferencing, Gary will educate, inform and entertain in his own style, as we explore one of his favourite wine regions.
The Loire is the longest river in France and contains a huge number of Appellations with a great variety of wine styles: sparkling wines abound, dry, off-dry and sweet wines, all from the ever so versatile Chenin Blanc grape. Not forgetting the ancestral home of Sauvignon Blanc – Sancerre.
Perhaps the Loire’s best kept secret is it makes some lovely red wines too. Here Cabernet Franc is allowed to shine without being blended as it is in Bordeaux. There is even some very fruity and (relatively) good value Pinot Noir to be enjoyed.
Our tasting programme is as follows (yes, that's right, we are tasting four Chenin Blanc's covering all the styles this grape produces here in the Loire)
Friday 15th Jan
We start with a sparkling wine – Vouvray, made from Chenin Blanc in the traditional method and then meet Cabernet Franc for the first time at Chinon, a delightfully light-bodied, fruity and herbaceous wine
- Vouvray AC Mousseux Reserve Brut NV Domaine Aubert
- Chinon AC L'Arpenty (Rouge) 2019
Friday 22nd Jan
For our second outing we travel west into Anjou where the Chenin Blanc grape shows itself possibly better than anywhere else in the world. We start with a bone dry example from the wonderful Chateau d’Epire in Savennières, oak aged and with amazing depth of flavour. Next, moving to the opposite end of the spectrum, a dessert wine from Coteaux du Layon, much lighter in style than the famous dessert wines of Bordeaux.
- Savennières AC Ch. D'Epiré Sec 2017
- Coteaux de Layon AC 'Atomes Crochus' Ch. La Tomaze 2019
Friday 29th Jan
Week three and we pop back to Vouvray for yet another Chenin Blanc, this time in the traditional “demi-sec” (off dry) style that is unique to this appellation. Then onto Saumur in the centre of the Loire for another Cabernet Franc, this time from the very ripe 2018 vintage. Quite a contrast to the Chinon as this wine has much more depth, less acidity and an amazing 14% abv alcohol.
- Vouvray AC 'Demi-Sec' Domaine Aubert 2018
- Saumur-Champigny AC Domaine Filliatreau 2018 (rouge)
Friday 5th Feb
We finish in the “Central Vineyards” the easternmost point of wine production in the Loire at the famous village of Sancerre. A lovely white wine made from Sauvignon Blanc (so different in style to New Zealand) and a little gem of a secret, Sancerre rouge, made from Pinot Noir, a delightfully light and fruity wine.
- Sancerre AC 'Les Perriers' Blanc Dom. André Vatan 2019
- Sancerre AC 'Maulin Bele' Rouge Dom. André Vatan 2018 (rouge)
